The Poetics of the British Sitcom

This master's thesis is focused on British sitcoms, which represent one of the basic elements of British humour as a much sought-after phenomenon across the world, including the Czech Republic. The thesis aims to introduce the reader to this particular television genre and outline the elements of comedic content both in general, as well as in relation to certain selected works. The thesis also aims to demonstrate how the described phenomenon transcends the usual framework of television. Regarding the methodology for examining the subject matter, a synthesis of relevant sources as well as various insights obtained during the master's studies are used to examine certain selected works of popular culture which represent the very essence of British sitcoms. The thesis outlines the boundaries of a television sitcom as an independent genre, also focusing on comedic works preceding the sitcom, overlaps with other genres and various specifics connected to the British cultural environment. Established macro theories of humour are applied to the British sitcom in order to explain the source of the comedic effect, as well as the influence of comedy in relation to relieving tension within society. The thesis focuses in particular on careful observations of the humour in certain cult works of comedy, such as Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister, 'Allo 'Allo!, Red Dwarf and The IT Crowd. The closest attention is paid to the role of the individual characters and environments in selected sitcoms, since those elements might be considered vital for a successful sitcom. The influences of British productions in this area as a whole are also mentioned, noting the social relevance of this often-overlooked phenomenon.
Reflecting the media of the 1970s and the 1980s - in-house periodicals published by Czechoslovak television and Czechoslovak radio

The thesis "Reflecting the media of the 1970s and the 1980s - in-house periodicals published by Czechoslovak television and Czechoslovak radio" disserts on the content of the quarterlies Televizní tvorba (Television production) and Rozhlasová práce (Radio production). The magazines which were published within two main - in that time already institutionalized - mass media were major tools serving to the KSČ, the communist party in former Czechoslovakia. Through them it was accomplishing its ideological, or more precisely propagandistic performance targeted to both, the citizens of the socialist state and abroad. Within this platform the thesis inspects the topics handled by then TV and radio employees, the following output of the discussions and their conclusions. The qualitative analysis of the two periodicals includes an introduction summarizing the historical facts that illustrate the situation of the end of the 1960's and the beginning of the 1970's. In addition, a list of periodicals published by Czechoslovak television and Czechoslovak radio for its internal use has been attached.
Popular Music in Television Entertainment in 90's in Czech Republic

The thesis "Popular Music in Television Entertainment in 90's in Czech Republic" is mainly engaged in the development of music show in this period, namely monitors developments of hit-parades Medúza and Eso. The period of 90's can be talk like a top of this kind of shows that have been an integral part of television entertainment. In connection with their development this study also deals with the history of these formats prior to 1989 and with the period context. The complexity of the topic also forms the theoretical basis in which work is about notions of popular culture, mass and consumer culture and globalization. The concept of globalization is closely related to the developement of television programs. Globalization is going through all the basic components of the production of these programs, both music and the television environment itself, and is just a possible consequence of the decline in the popularity of television hit-parades today. Television entertainment on TV screens of ČT and TV Nova in the early millenium and today

This diploma thesis deals with television entertainment as a phenomenon on Czech television screens. In the theoretical part the thesis provides an overview of entertainment as a term and concept and its definition, further describes its historical forms before the advent of mass media and its subsequent development towards the media entertainment revolution, with emphasis on establishing entertainment on television screens. The thesis then defines the entertainment functions of the media and their importance in society, but also the criticism of entertainment. The thesis also provides the classification of television entertainment genres and formats and examples of penetration of entertainment into other forms of communication. From the point of view of Czech legislation, it also evaluates the legal conditions for the broadcasting of television entertainment in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part concludes with the history of television entertainment on ČST and TV Nova. Political-news satire in The Daily Show

The aim of the Bachelor thesis "Political-news satire in The Daily Show" is to map evolution of political and news satire in TV in United States of America with emphasis to evolution and impact of the cult show The Daily Show, which is airing on Comedy Central channel. It tries to map structure and evolution of the show throughout the whole history of the show. After general introduction to the history of political satire in television before The Daily Show was broadcast, the thesis focuses on the most prominent personalities who worked as a staff of the show and had the biggest impact on formation of content and the message of The Daily Show. Particular attention is paid to the main era of Jon Stewart's role as a host, where the show has experienced a period of the greatest fame and has influenced the future of the political-news satire to the present. However, it also examines the main changes in recent history of the show and the changes brought by the new moderator Trevor Noah. In the last part, the work focuses on the influence that the program and its prominent personalities have had on the current wave of increased interest and popularity of political- satire not only in the United States, but all around the world and examines the most famous figures of contemporary political-news satire.
Saturday Night Live Behind the Curtain

The aim of the Bachelor thesis "Behind the Curtain of Saturday Night Live" is to map general principles that have created an American sketch show Saturday Night Live. The main emphasis is put on creation, structure and protagonists of this television show. Last but not least, the author deals with the big socio-political themes incorporated in the show by its creators. The author proposes three main research questions. Question no. 1: What is the casting procedure for Saturday Night Live? Question no. 2: What is the structure of Saturday Night Live's creative week? Question no. 3: How successful were the individual SNL teams? The author is using qualitative content analysis method. The theoretical part focuses on television entertainment, the role of television in the society and role of television in the USA. The practical part focuses on the creation of Saturday Night Live, the casting process and the overall structure of the show. Additionally, the thesis takes a look on the individual teams, star guests and it also examines influences of socio-political themes on this TV show.
The TV show Prostřeno as a mirrof of social and political phenomenons in czech society

Prostřeno! show became a phenomenon amongst Czech television programmes. It is broadcasted daily and usually it is watched by hundreds of thousands of viewers. This culinary show should be apolitical and should focus solely on cooking and table manners. However, this is not the case and the show is corrupted by topics currently resonating in the Czech society. In a fact, these topics are usually connected with stereotypes and prejudices towards minority cultures and together with dramaturgical interventions they cause conflicts among show participants and also have impact on viewers of this show. This thesis aims to capture previously mentioned stereotypes in context of three examined topics (homosexuality, Roma ethnicity and Muslim culture), those have been significant themes in Czech society since 2015. The thesis is aiming to present a relevant view on if and eventually how are these stereotypes, prejudices and stances presented in the Prostřeno! show. Taking high viewership of this show into account, it might be assumed that the show itself is taking part on creating of stances, stereotypes or prejudices, which are present in the Czech society.

Bachelor's thesis called "Television entertainment in 2013" deals with trends, basic signs and kinds of TV shows belonging to the genre of television entertainment (TV fun) broadcasted in Czech republic. The first and theoretical chapter's goal is to outline some essential terms related to the genre and television entertainment. The rest of the work has been devoted to the actual analysis of individual programs. The work is divided into Czech and foreign series, Czech and foreign game shows, reality television and Czech and foreign entertainment programs.
Finding beauty in the American TV entertainment: comparison shows Miss America and Americas next top model

This bachelor thesis focuses on the ideal of beauty and concept of beauty by two American broadcasts, Miss America and America's Next Top Model. The theoretical part provides knowledge about the genre of reality TV and its possible impact on viewers and public health. It covers the reasons that lead the television audience to watch this genre. Thesis also deals with beauty pageants and their tradition, the general ideal of beauty in today's society and the media world. The practical part deals with the research. In this section I summarize the research questions, methodology, samples of the research and the results of the analysis of the both shows. The results include major changes in both shows over time, the concept of beauty in the programs and the subsequent comparison of this concept and preferred appearance of the contestants.
Talent shows in the CR and in the world-the analysis of selected talent formats and their procedures in the television broadcasting and thier influence on the behaviour of the audience

In my dissertation I survey the historic progress of the reality TV and the reality show, focussing on the specific genre of the talent shows, which stands for the current phenomenon of the entertainment industry in TV broadcasting. Using the method of the oral history I'll explain in detail the principals of running these shows on chosen formats and point out how different or same strategies can appear in shows all over the world. Further I'll focus on the structure and the level of a production, main features of the audience personality and behaviour, for example forming the relationship between the viewer and the participants on the basing on personal stories or praising and idealising the competitors. The next step of my analysis will be a depiction of the economic thesis and rules, which run the talent shows, which give them a direction and drive them on the TV market. I'll give an insight into the terms as the affective economics, building lovemarks or an inspiring fan, which are characteristic for the era of the convergence of media, which are considerably covered by talent shows. In the end my work depicts also the role of the jury and their specific trail, which are necessary for the viewer ratings and potential success of the certain show.
